Strange Question Marks Appear on My Website After Uploading to Host

Hi,

I have converted an excel spreadsheet to a text file. A lot of the text in the columns is in French, causing characters such as "�" and "�" to come out as question marks. I have tried post-obit the guidance in this article (https://support.office.com/en-gb/art...c-d536d42fd861) but I don't the "Ostend file format conversion on open up" option that it advises.

This sounds like a font/language problem where some characters in the font that the document was created with don't be in the font existence used for the other linguistic communication and a substitution is being made. A txt or csv file should exist but ascii characters. Can you open up this file in Notepad? If you tin, are the characters correct? If the characters are not correct, when saving attempt clicking on the Tools button beside the Save button, click on Spider web Options, Encoding and choose Western European or ISO.

I did simply try and open it in Notepad and the question marks still appeared. I so went back to the original excel file and saved the file once more as a text file just this fourth dimension saved it as "unicode text". This seems to have solved the issue. Does this seem like a good solution?

If Unicode text gives the results that yous are looking for I would say that y'all have constitute the solution. Practise several tests and if the results are consistently what yous desire then the problem should be considered solved. If that is the example delight mark this thread as solved.

Howdy newdoverman,

While unicode text did help solve the initial trouble, the result isn't solved every bit the portal I demand to upload my file to does't recognize unicode text and therefore won't have it. Delight let me know if y'all take any other tips.

I accept looked into this, they merely accept text (unlimited). Do you lot accept an idea on how to fix the issue with the text file?

"Unlimited" actually doesn't tell you very much that is useful. Try loading your file into Word and save as Apparently TEXT and see how that is accepted.

I believe that past unlimited they mean "delimited tab". I have just tried your idea newdoverman and have yet had no luck. It uploads fine and removes the question marks but at that place are still several characters not recognized.

If they hateful tab delimited, that is a very poor style of describing it. Tin you upload a sample problem file? At this point we are just guessing. Too, bear witness the characters that are non existence recognized.

Fastened is an example excel file of how it should look in French, and a text file of how it looks once I salve it equally a text (tab delimited) file.

I was able to properly catechumen the excel file into these two txt files. The encoding is Western European (Windows). My figurer Regional Settings are: Format: English (Canada), Keyboard: United states of america

CSV and DOS (text) files did not work properly.

Thanks. I see that the tab delimited example doesn't come out right. The unicode version is fine simply like I said, the identify I upload them too doesn't seem to accept it. I feel that we are getting shut though.

The simply matter that I tin can think of is that your regional settings may be causing the problem. The encoding might as well be a trouble. Both files that I sent to you were Western European (Windows) encoded and they were both perfect here.

The technical information that you lot were given was pretty well useless. You need to know the format and the encoding that they expect. The right format with the wrong encoding will not work and visa versa. Unlimited, only doesn't mean anything so you lot demand much better data than what has been given to you.
